The Thonet chair, sometimes known as the Thonet 14 or the Thonet 14 chair, is a great classic of chairs, almost a legend. Simple, but elegant. Lightweight, but sturdy. Thanks to these characteristics, Thonet chairs have become true icons, until they become among the most famous chairs in history.

The story of the Thonet chair: model number 14

The story of the Thonet chair is studded with episodes. Moreover, in over a century of history, it has accommodated more than one famous person. Its design, in fact, dates back to 1859 when the cabinetmaker Michael Thonet developed the design. To create the sinuous lines that characterized the chair Thonet, the cabinetmaker used a technique that was then spreading: steam. Thanks to this, in fact, it was possible to soften the wood to give it the desired curvature.

According to a legend in vogue in France, during the 1867 Expo, Thonet's chair no. 14 fell from the Eiffel Tower, falling 57 metres. In the crash, to everyone's surprise, the chair remained intact. Since then the myth of this legendary chair has spread.

Austrian Prince Klemens von Metternich was even interested in Thonet's experiments, among others. Soon, the inventor of the chair was entrusted with the realization of the furnishings of the Liechtenstein Palace and the Schwarzenberg Palace. The real fortune of Thonet and his chair, however, was in public spaces. The Thonet chair, in fact, began to be used in cafes in Vienna. Also for this reason, the No. 14 began to be called Vienna chair.

The fortune of this chair, moreover, is also due to another feature. The Austrian cabinetmaker, in fact, managed to develop a process of realization that involved a division of tasks. The chair, in fact, was composed of only six pieces, easily assembled. This allows the company to send the chair comfortably anywhere. Thanks to the industrialisation process, it is also possible to keep prices down. In short, therefore, the No. 14 spread everywhere, appreciated by the owners of the cafes, as well as by their patrons, often intellectuals who have made history in every field of art.  

Thonet chair today

Today chair no. 14 Thonet changed its name. The current model, still produced by the parent company, is called No. 214. It remains a very sober and elegant chair, which can be used to furnish restaurants and bars in a classic style, or homes where you want to achieve a particular bistro effect. Our Thonet chair is made of solid beech wood. The structure, solid as Michael Thonet wanted, can be obtained in its natural colouring, in cherry, walnut or wenge. As for the seat, then, our Thonet chairs are available with a seat in Vienna straw, like the original ones, in wood or fabric.
